When choosing an automatic self-cleaning litter box, safety is one of the first things every cat parent considers. At CATLINK, safety has always been an essential part of how we design our litter boxes.
In this article, we’re taking a closer look at the safety features built into the CATLINK Scoop Robot Pro. Whether you’re considering bringing one home or simply curious about how automatic litter boxes are designed with cats in mind, this guide offers a closer look at what goes on behind the scenes.
Structural Safety by Design
Most automatic litter boxes on the market use one of two basic rotating designs.
One is the Y-axis rotating structure, like the CATLINK Scooper SE. This type of litter box has historically raised some safety concerns. Cats can be naturally cautious or easily startled, and if the drum continues rotating after a cat has entered, there is a risk that the cat could become trapped inside.

CATLINK considered this possibility from the very beginning. To address the risk of the drum becoming completely enclosed, CATLINK’s Y-axis rotating litter boxes use a partial gear design. This means that even in the event of a malfunction or an unexpected power outage, the drum cannot simply lock a cat inside. Your cat can still safely enter and exit the litter box.
The X-axis rotating structure, used by the CATLINK Scoop Robot Pro, takes a different approach. During operation, the entrance remains completely open, allowing cats to enter or leave whenever they want.

And if you want to keep a closer eye on your cat’s bathroom habits, you can turn on notifications in the CATLINK app. You’ll be able to see when your cat uses the litter box and receive a record of each completed bathroom visit, so you can have greater peace of mind that everything is working safely as it should.
A Hidden Waste Bin Opening
If you’ve used a CATLINK Scooper Pro-X Series litter box, you may have noticed that the waste bin becomes visible from underneath while the litter box is cleaning itself. It’s a practical design, but like many practical solutions, it isn’t without its potential drawbacks.

For one thing, an exposed waste bin opening can allow odors to escape during the cleaning cycle. It also creates a possibility for a curious cat to come into direct contact with the waste bin.
Of course, the smell of a litter box depends heavily on factors such as the type of litter you use and your cat’s diet. But keeping the waste compartment more enclosed can provide an additional layer of odor control. That’s why the CATLINK Scoop Robot Pro takes a different approach, with a curved, concealed waste chute.
During the cleaning cycle, the waste bin opening stays out of sight. More importantly, this design adds another layer of safety: your cat is less likely to accidentally step into the waste opening or come into contact with the waste bin while the drum is rotating.
In other words, there’s no need to worry about a curious little paw getting into places it shouldn’t or leaving a very unwelcome surprise on your fabric sofa.
Weight Detection & Anti-Pinch Protection

Safety doesn’t rely on just one feature. Across CATLINK automatic litter boxes, whenever the system detects an abnormal situation, the rotation stops immediately.
The anti-pinch system works on a principle similar to the safety mechanism found in automatic car windows. If the window detects an object—such as a finger—it automatically reverses to prevent injury.
For a litter box, however, the system takes a gentler approach. When a cat is detected inside the litter box, the device stops completely rather than reversing; Because sudden movements can easily startle cats, stopping the rotation provides a calmer and safer response.

The anti-pinch system also works together with the litter box’s weight sensor. Once the weight sensor detects that a cat is inside, the device will stop operating as well.
Together, weight detection and anti-pinch protection form a dual layer of safety, helping ensure that the litter box responds quickly whenever your cat is detected inside.
